What’s New on the Thinkware U3000 4K UHD Dual-Channel Dash Cam?

Welcoming 2023, we have launched two new 4K dash cams namely the BlackVue DR970X series and the VIOFO A139 Pro. The latter, which is the more budget-friendly 4K UHD option is what we consider the first dash cam to sport the Sony STARVIS 2 image sensor technology.

The new Thinkware U3000 is also designed with the Sony STARVIS 2, but is categorized in the premium market. This dash cam records at 4K UHD (3840x2160) @ 30 fps or 2K QHD (2,560 x 1,440p) @ 60 fps for the front unit through the 8MP Sony STARVIS 2 IMX 678, while the rear camera captures 2K QHD (2,560 x 1,440p) @ 30fps via 5 MP Sony STARVIS IMX 335. With the new Sony STARVIS 2 technology, the U3000 has improved low-light performance and contrast, provides high resolution and clarity, while also lowering power consumption in parking mode.

We also noticed faster performance, especially now that the Thinkware U3000 carries an Ambarella H22A77 processor and a DDR3 4GB RAM - a level up from the U1000’s Ambarella H22A75 processor and DDR3 1GB RAM. When compared to the U1000, the U3000 also has an option to record at a higher bitrate up to 30Mbps - higher than the predecessor’s 28 Mbps!

One of the reasons why we love driving with a Thinkware is its Super Night Vision. Through the years, Thinkware has continued to develop this technology, with the Thinkware U1000 having Super Night Vision 2.0, and the newer models like the Q1000 with Super Night Vision 3.0.

And, as we expected, Thinkware took another step higher for the new U3000. Boasting the highest sensitivity and lowest noise technology especially in dark environments, the Thinkware U3000 is equipped with the industry’s most advanced, the Super Night Vision 4.0.

Here’s another solid feature on the Thinkware U3000, which puts it above even with the U1000 or Q1000 combined. Now, why did we stress on these two models?

While all of these have smart parking modes, they are also compatible with the Thinkware RADAR module accessory that extends the recording time of impact video files in Energy Savings Mode 2.0. If the RADAR Module detects motion, the dash cam enters standby mode and prepares to save the event in the event of an impact. When no impacts are detected, the dash cam returns to Energy Saving 2.0 and does not save the footage. Again, this will only work if you have the RADAR module installed.

Now, with the Thinkware U3000, you no longer have to worry about buying an additional accessory to enjoy this feature, as the RADAR detector is already built in the unit! This makes the U3000 the first Thinkware dash cam to have a built-in RADAR, saving you for up to $89.99 in cost.

While both front and rear are equipped with the RADAR, the dash cam allows longer parking mode directions. On top of this, you also get Smart Parking Mode that prevents heat-related damage by automatically switching the Thinkware U3000 to a low-power mode if the temperature inside the vehicle gets too high during parking surveillance. Moreover, the U3000 can also announce crucial information like the battery’s charge level and status.

Aside from being the first Thinkware dash cam to sport the Sony STARVIS 2 technology, the Thinkware U3000 is also the first to have a larger memory capacity.

While previous models - even the U1000 - only had 128 GB, the U3000 can now support up to 256 GB storage capacity. This is highly important as the Thinkware U3000 records in 4K, so the dash cam will record in large-sized files. Now, with larger micro SD card space, the U3000 gives you more peace of mind in storing clips - although the Thinkware Cloud is also a big help, which leads us to the next feature.

And probably one of the most convincing features is the Cloud connectivity. The U3000 is compatible with Thinkware Connected which enables drivers or car owners to watch their car remotely through the smartphone app or the desktop viewer. We love this feature, especially for fleets that need to monitor their vehicles closely!

Checking out the U3000’s Cloud features, the dash cam can receive Strong Impact Notifications while Driving, Impact Notifications when Parked, Emergency SOS messages, Remote Live View, Vehicle Status & Driving History, and Geo-Fencing.

While previous Thinkware models, such as the U1000, came with a hardwiring cable, the new Thinkware U3000 comes standard with an OBD power cable. This too will enable your parking mode, however the OBD installation will be considerably different. Prefer hardwiring? You can still purchase a Thinkware hardwiring kit separately from us.

Moreover, the OBD Power Cable has been tested to work with most non-EV and EV vehicles with an OBD power outlet. A full compatibility list will be released soon.

Now, aside from the major software upgrades on the U3000, Thinkware also added useful accessories in every package.

If you purchase a Thinkware U3000, you will automatically get a free CPL filter to minimize reflections especially in bright light conditions. We recommend you to pair this with the BlackboxMyCar Aqua Shield for protection against environmental factors such as rain, dust and glares for clearer footage than the typical 4K.
